Nong Hyun
Programme Note
This piece is a work of stereo tape music. The term “Nong-hyun” is the Korean word for the musical effect of changing pitch caused by the pulsation of a string or breath from a Korean woodwind or string instrument such as a Dae-gum, Gayageum or Goh-Mun-Go. In a broad sense, the meaning refers not only to a vibration such as in traditional Western music, but also pulling a string down, or pushing it, or both together, between the attack and decay time of its envelope to make a sound change pitch dramatically at the beginning (or sometimes in the middle or end). The meaning commonly connotes a feeling of joy or the sorrows of life. In this piece, the Nong-hyun is emulated through frequency modulation (FM) which expands and emphases its musical role and meaning.
