Programme Note
A place has its own uniqueness due to its geographical and historical factors. Even if it is a place we have not experienced, we may have a certain impression through mass media such as photos or videos regarding the place. That is, space has its own face (poetic images) from individuals, even though it could be vivid or blur in their minds. However, even if it is a well-known place, it is difficult to determine the site by sound alone. We only imagine a place by inferring from combinations of sounds (individual objects - traffic, chat, ambience, etc.) appearing in the recorded landscape. In other words, space in sound becomes a place only when we refer to information in our memory.
In this work, the musical space is expressed through the combination of such sounds. In addition, individual sounds (objects) are connected as a medium of different spaces. It is as if the object is a note, and such objects are gathering together to create a harmonious place. Thus, the place can change into another place along with the object as a medium between them. Through this work, I try to reconstruct the auditory place of the listener, dramatic change of sonic spatiality and, finally discover a new perspective on the sound that appears in common in various places with an immersive audio system.
This piece is a work of first-order Ambisonics for tape. Most of the sounds are recorded by Ambisonics microphones (first-order).
